Oestrogen Formats

  • Oral oestrogen tablet: not always first choice due to the slight increase in blood clots, less reliable absorption, not always suitable for type 2 diabetes, if you are obese or have gall bladder disease.
  • Oestrogen spray: Sprayed onto the skin onto the inner forearm or inner thigh. Usually good if you need higher doses of oestrogen.
  • Oestrogen skin patch: Stick to skin on bottom or upper thigh. Can cause irritation with some people, some ladies say they don’t stick well.
  • Oestrogen gel: rubbed into the arms or legs, comes in pump packs or sachets.  Easy to absorb, easy to increase dose.
  • Oestrogen implants: are not regularly used, difficult to find someone who inserts them
  • Topical vaginal oestrogen: inserted into the vagina via cream, tablet or ring, to relieve dryness, does not improve other menopause symptoms.

Remember: If you have oestrogen (except topical vaginal)  you will need progesterone if you have a uterus. Either tablet, Intrauterine Device System (such as Mirena) or combined with patches…
